Transforming agri-food systems: Legislative interventions for improved nutrition and sustainability

2021

This study, prepared by the DDSA Chair under the memorandum of understanding signed in 2017 between FAO and Université Laval, aims to deepen the understanding of the role of law in the transformation of food systems, in order to improve their sustainability as well as nutrition and health outcomes. The study highlights the main functions of law and legal mechanisms that can support sustainable food systems and healthy, nutritious diets.

Published by FAO in July 2021, this study represents a pioneering contribution: it is the first work to systematically analyze law as a driver of transformation in the transition toward sustainable food systems. It informed discussions at the Pre-Summit and the United Nations Food Systems Summit (2021) and is now among FAO's reference publications on the governance of more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agri-food systems.

As part of this study, the DDSA Chair conducted consultations with representatives from FAO, WHO, UNICEF, UN-Nutrition, and IDLO, as well as with researchers from several universities internationally, in order to ground the legal analysis in the institutional and operational realities of food systems.
