Legal Analysis of the Recognition of Québec Ice Cider — PGI in Europe

Funded by the Programme d'appui au développement des appellations réservées et des termes valorisants (PADARTV) of the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) and developed in collaboration with the Association des cidriculteurs artisans du Québec (CARTV), this project built upon the submission by the DDSA Chair, in early 2017, of the Report on the Recognition of Québec Ice Cider and Ice Wine in Europe. This submission led to several additional meetings and discussions conducted jointly with CARTV and MAPAQ.

An additional grant from MAPAQ subsequently made it possible to continue the project in order to analyze the various legal avenues and propose directions aimed at modernizing the Act Respecting Reserved Designations and Added-Value Claims. The final report was submitted in December 2018, addressing in particular the issues raised by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) for regimes providing for geographical indications and other designations of origin and added-value claims.
